We met in B3 for pizza and drinks before boarding the bus to head over to the Rose Bowl. Once there, students were able to grab UCLA fan fare and dance it up. This year, we were able to watch the kick off and cheer for UCLA--except two students who were hoping for a loss. It went down to the wire with a field goal attempt in the last 8 seconds...to no avail, UCLA lost to Utah. After the game, the bus ride home was silent. All aboard were either asleep or listening to their earbuds. Special thanks goes to Mr. Moreau for chaperoning. Upon arrival at the event (1-2 hours before the game), groups are greeted by a current UCLA student and led to the “IGTC “college fair area. Students are immediately immersed in Bruin traditions, as they learn the UCLA Eight Clap and the importance of higher education. While at the college fair, students speak with academic counselors and pick up educational information about questions they may have regarding education and preparing for college. Students also have the opportunity to get autographs from student-athletes. Other fun fair activities include carnival games, activity books, a DJ, give-away items, and removable tattoos.
Schedule of Events, October 4, 2014 Arrive at Gahr: 4:00 PM to eat (everybody eats before boarding) Leave Gahr for The Rose Bowl: 4:30 PM Entrance to the Fair: 5:30 PM UCLA vs. Utah Game: 7:30PM Return to Gahr: by 12:00 AM All AVID students are required to wear a name badge for the entire trip. On the way home, students will call for time of pick up. All Gahr students should be off campus within 15 minutes of delivery. In addition, students are required to provide a cell phone in case of emergency while at the Rose Bowl. Finally, students may bring unopened water and soda bottles and unopened chips or candy. Food at the stadium is very expensive. Students will receive a flyer on October 1 with the information. I hope that you had a great weekend with your family. Students will recieve their note and special surprise on Monday of next week.
Thank you ASB for working with AVID to make this week a success. Thank you so much for your attendance last night to Back to School Night. Your commitment to your student is very appriecated. The activity is a sample of a low level "get to know you" activity from AVID. Students are given the opporiunity to gain speaking skills, or rather the soft skills, that employers are looking for in the real world. Thank you for playing along.
If you didn't get a change to come by B3 before the presentation, we are sorry that we missed you. We hope that next time you will join us. Parent University 101 classes are beginning soon. Below are the dates for the grade level meetings. Please RSVP with Mrs. Moreau when you can attend a session. |
